Meet the incredible Prajwal Xavier

Prajwal Xavier is an Indian calligraphy and typography artist whose practice explores the cultural life of letterforms across public spaces, traditional scripts, and contemporary design. His work moves between calligraphy, type research, street observation, and the documentation of vernacular lettering, particularly the hand-painted signboards that shape the visual landscape of cities like Kochi.

Deeply interested in heritage and ancient writing systems, Prajwal works across Indian scripts, Latin, and Hebrew, studying how scripts carry layers of history, migration, and cultural exchange. His Malayalam calligraphy has become a significant part of his practice, reinterpreting the script through contemporary compositions while respecting its traditional rhythm and structure. His calligraphic works have been exhibited internationally, including in Singapore and South Korea.

Through his typographic initiative Type Walk, Prajwal documents and interprets street lettering as a cultural archive shaped by language, politics, and local identity. The project was featured as part of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2025 edition, highlighting how everyday signage preserves the evolving visual history of the city.

Alongside his artistic work, Prajwal incorporates calligraphic and typographic thinking into brand identities, luxury weddings, and cultural projects, bringing the elegance of Malayalam script into contemporary design contexts. His custom lettering and calligraphic compositions have been used in multilingual movie titles, textile prints, brand campaigns, and bespoke tattoo designs.

We are thrilled to bring his distinctive calligraphy to our journals. We hope they inspire you create freely, intuitively, and without restraint.
